General Food Product Pest Information
The saw toothed grain beetle is identified as having six saw like projections on each side of its thorax.
The Indian meal moth is the most commonly found food product pest in homes. They have distinctly copper colored wings.
The rice weevil is the most destructive pest in stored grains. Adults and larva feed on the grain and the adults bore a single hole into the grain, lay one egg in the hole and then seal it up again. Larva and pupa live inside the grain and adults emerge through an irregular shaped hole. These are found in milled products and macaroni.
Drugstore Beetles are very similar to Cigarette Beetles but have lines running lengthwise on the wing covers. They infest many of the same products and are also strong flyers and may be found anywhere in the home, while the source is usually the kitchen. Do not overlook stored products, leather goods, insect collections, paprika, or dried flowers in other rooms, or closets, however.
Cigarette Beetles are small round dark brown to black bugs. When viewed from the side they have a humped-back similar to a Lady Bug. This insect is found in processed food in the home in pasta and grains.
